Glossary
Short explanations of terms that often appear in technical data sheets.
A foam cord, usually closed-cell, that sets the depth of a joint and stops the sealant from bonding to the joint base.
The coat that carries the colour and any metallic or pearl effect in a refinish system. A clearcoat goes on top.
A refinish technique that fades the new colour into the neighbouring surface so any colour difference becomes invisible.
The chemical hardening through which a paint, lacquer or sealant reaches its final properties. It can take much longer than touch-dry.
A planned gap that lets parts of a structure move with temperature and load. It is closed with an elastic sealant that follows the movement.
The wait between coats that lets part of the solvent or water evaporate. It depends on temperature and air movement.
A first treatment that penetrates the wood and protects it against moisture, fungi and insects.
The stress in a sealant at a given elongation. LM marks a low-modulus (soft) sealant, HM a high-modulus (stiffer) one.
The movement a sealant can take without failing, given as a percentage of the joint width. For class 25LM it is ±25%.
The code a car maker gives each colour. It is usually printed on a label in the door jamb, under the bonnet or in the boot.
An opaque, coloured lacquer that hides wood or MDF. It is tinted to a colour card.
How long a two-component product stays usable after mixing. Once it has passed, the mix must not be used.
The first coat on a surface. It improves adhesion, protects the substrate and gives the following coats an evenly absorbing base.
Safety data sheet. Lists a product’s hazards, safe handling, storage and first-aid information.
A scale for the hardness of rubber and elastic materials. The higher the value, the harder the material.
A device that measures a painted surface’s colour from several angles to find the closest formula.
A transparent colourant that tints wood without hiding its grain. A protective lacquer goes on top.
Technical data sheet. Describes a product’s properties, application conditions, drying times and consumption.
When a sealant bonds to the joint base as well as its two sides. It can no longer follow movement and fails early; a backer rod prevents it.
Volatile organic compounds: the solvents released into the air as a coating dries. Much lower in water-based systems.
